Six steps, in order.

Catch and contain

Buckets under drips, towels around the spread. Move electronics, furniture and anything irreplaceable out of the wet zone before it grows.

Poke the bulge

A ceiling sagging with water should be drained deliberately: one small puncture with a screwdriver over a bucket beats a spontaneous collapse across the room.

Kill power near water

Light fixtures and outlets in a wet ceiling or wall are shock hazards until the area dries and an electrician clears them.

Photograph everything

Interior damage, water path, exterior roof from the ground if safe. Timestamped photos are what insurance adjusters actually accept.

Check the obvious causes

Is it raining hard right now? Did a gutter overflow? A skylight condensating? Knowing what changed helps triage enormously.

Call a roofer, not just a restorer

Drywall companies dry the room; only a roofer stops the water. Get the source assessed before restoration quotes multiply.

When a leak becomes urgent.

Call same-day: active drip during rain, spreading ceiling stain, any sagging drywall, water near electrical.
Call within days: intermittent drip only in heavy rain, musty smell after storms, staining that grows slowly between rains.
Book at leisure: a single old stain that hasn't moved in months. Photograph it and watch it; it may be historical.

Where do most leaks actually start?

Flashings, not fields. Chimneys, skylights, vents, valleys and wall transitions cause most leaks we trace. The water usually enters there and travels along sheathing before showing up somewhere unrelated below, which is why ceiling-stain-to-source guesswork fails.

My roof is new. Why is it leaking?

Almost always detailing: a flashing missed at a transition, or penetrations sealed instead of flashed. New roofs under warranty get fixed by the installer; check your workmanship paperwork and call them first.

Can I fix it myself with roofing cement?

Cement patches on shingle roofs rarely stop leaks and always make eventual proper repair harder. On a flat membrane they can trap water in the assembly. A tube in the closet buys hours, not seasons.

Will insurance cover my leak?

Sudden events like wind-lifted shingles or storm damage: typically yes, minus your deductible. Gradual wear, long-standing stains and deferred maintenance: no. Document dates carefully; adjusters distinguish fresh water from old.
