A roof comes with two warranties that cover completely different failures, and most homeowners only find out which is which when one of them doesn't apply. Here's the map.

Factory versus installer.

Material warranty (from the manufacturer). Covers defects in the product itself: delamination, premature granule loss beyond spec, manufacturing flaws. It does not cover installation errors, and it prorates: most "lifetime" shingle warranties pay a shrinking share after year ten.
Workmanship warranty (from your roofer). Covers the installation: flashings, fastening, transitions, detailing. Statistically this is where almost all early roof failures come from, which makes this warranty the more valuable of the two for the first decade.

The practical takeaway: when comparing quotes, the installer's written workmanship term deserves more attention than the manufacturer's brochure headline.

What voids material warranty claims.

Unregistered install

Enhanced warranties usually require registration within a set window by the installing contractor. Miss it and you're on base coverage only.

Mixed-system shortcuts

"Full system" warranties require the matched underlayment, starter, ridge cap and ventilation from the same manufacturer. Swap components and enhanced terms lapse.

Poor attic ventilation

Manufacturers can deny claims where inadequate ventilation cooked or condensed the shingles from below. Ventilation is part of the installation contract.

Pressure washing

Aggressive cleaning strips granules and voids coverage on asphalt products. Moss control must be chemical and gentle.

Solar panels or antennae

Penetrating an existing roof without manufacturer-approved mounting and flashing can transfer blame to whoever drilled.

Unpermitted structural change

Additions tied into the original roof need proper integration; undocumented modifications hand manufacturers an easy denial.

Is a lifetime shingle warranty really lifetime?

It covers the product against manufacturing defects while you own the home, but labour coverage typically drops to zero after about 10 to 12 years and material payout prorates steeply. Read the schedule page, not the headline.

Do I need to register the warranty myself?

On our installs, no. We complete manufacturer registration as part of close-out and forward you the confirmation email. If another contractor tells you registration "isn't needed," get it in writing.

Does a new roof raise my home value?

Appraisers treat a documented recent roof with transferable warranties as a major plus at sale time. Both material and workmanship coverage often transfer to a new owner within set windows; check terms before listing.

What if my roofer goes out of business?
